Praise for Every Fixed Star
I highly recommend Every Fixed Star. Jane Kirkpatricks storytelling is deft and true; she breathes life into the long-ago Oregon country with warmth, emotion, and a deep understanding of the regions people and past. With depth, creativity, and inspiration, Every Fixed Star provides a fresh view of this period in the Pacific Northwests history, showing the complicated dynamics between settlers, fur traders, missionaries, natives, and visionaries. Jane has vividly captured the history of the fur trade for intelligent women readers.
Laurie Winn Carlson, author of Seduced by the West and On Sidesaddles to Heaven: The Women of the Rocky Mountain Mission
Jane Kirkpatrick has a rare gift, for her novels touch both the emotions and the intellect. She fills her stories with living history, each rich detail carefully researched and woven into a very particular time and placethe Columbia Country of the 1820s. And yet, Every Fixed Star is far from a dry history; rather, it is the moving, heartfelt story of one womans journey toward accepting her own failings as a wife and as a mothera struggle common to every woman in every century. Through Maries heart knowing, we are forced to examine our own hearts and lives and emerge the better for it. Janes novels are more than a good read; they are a life-altering experience.

Letter From Jane Kirkpatrick
Dear Reader,
Marie Dorion, widowed with two young sons, finds her métierwork to which she is best suitedwork the world needs doing. As the author of this second book in my Tender Ties Historical series, I hope that even in your busy life, youll find the time to read this story and consider the gift of your own métier.
This ninth novel follows my best-selling BookSense 76 title, A Name of Her Own. Both books tell the story of a remarkable Ioway Indian woman, the only woman to join the sixty-man Astor Expedition that established the West coast fur trade in 1811. Widowed three years later, Marie Dorion must make her way in the wilderness of landscape, relationship and spirit. Her work, the raising of sons, paying off a debt, risking love and losing, finding inspiration and peace in her soul are what sustain her on a journey I think were all called to make.
The historical record reveals a little of Madam Dorion though recorders of the fur trade generally neglected the roles of women. Some oral stories exist and unnamed women appear in the footnotes of Hudson Bay Companys expedition journals and in reports sent East by American trappers. A reservation record reveals Maries sons departure. Another son appears far away at the signing of a treaty. The passions of womens lives appear through births, marriages and deaths written down by the missionaries and in translations of the French priests documents of the Columbia Country.
Out of these fragments of historical fact, Ive tried to weave a story of an ordinary woman who lived an extraordinary life. Its a story meant to nurture the human spirit and honor the gift of grace.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.
Sincerely,
Jane Kirkpatrick,
Author
