Have you ever had a burning heart? I don't mean heartburn, but a heart that is warmed by the power of the Word of God. When one's heart is warmed and burning with the power of the Word, that person must tell it.
This was the case with Jesus and the two who were walking to Emmaus. The two were talking about the death and resurrection of Jesus when Jesus, himself, joined them. They did not know it was Jesus, but they welcomed this traveler to journey with them to Emmaus. I can see them walking down that road, talking excitedly about the resurrection and not recognizing Jesus. They were anxious to share the news, for they could not believe that he was the only one in Jerusalem who did not know what had happened.
Jesus took over the conversation because he could see how reluctant they were to believe. He had to make it clear, so he started with Moses and the prophets and revealed to them all that had been written about him in the scriptures. I am sure their hearts started to burn during this conversation, but they may not have recognized the source of the burning because they did not know that it was Jesus.
The two must have been captivated by this stranger, for when they reached their destination, they invited him to stay with them and join them for supper. It was while Jesus was breaking bread that their eyes were opened, and then they had to go back to Jerusalem and tell it.
We may have a burning-heart experience when hearing the scriptures interpreted or in the breaking of bread for communion or in the pouring of water for baptism. It may even occur in the singing of a hymn. But whenever we recognize Jesus, our hearts will burn, and we must tell it.
Lord, I want my heart to burn with love as I tell others about the resurrection. Amen.
